Abstract
We present a study on high intellectual abilities (HIA) at educational level, using as a bench-mark the challenges teachers must face in the teaching/learning process of a type of student who stands out significantly at cognitive level. We define the concept of HIA and differentiate between students who might be exceptionally gifted, talented, precocious or simply well-stimulated. We explain the relation among students with HIA and those with specific educational needs (SEN) and the need to promote their inclusion and attention to diversity. We analyse measures to detect HIA in the Balearic Islands and we review the type of response given at educational and familiar level, and by the school counselling department (SCD). Finally, we determine the prevalence and total number of HIA students that remain undetected and thus are lost every school year.
