Abstract
This paper uses an exhaustive review of the literature to describe the complex emotional process involved in listening to music. It starts by describing the most important theories that have been proposed to describe this process, over the course of history, and then goes on to define aesthetic emotions and the methods most commonly used to describe these. Next, it considers how the composite parts of music (tempo, intensity, intervals, etc.) influence listeners’ feelings. The article concludes by considering the usefulness of music as an effective resource in emotional education.
