Abstract
Rousseau (1712-1778) is and will continue to be a key figure in modern education. Emile (1762), his main work on education, marks a turning point, a before and after in the course of educational thought and practice. There is no modern education without Rousseau; just as there is no post-modernity without Nietzsche. Although Rousseau concluded a period of education and marked the beginning of the following one, his influence is replete with myths. The main aim of this paper, among others, is to reveal some of the myths attributed to Rousseau. Likewise, we analyse how there was a paradigm shift in education as a result of his work. The centrality of moral education, educational activism and naturalism are some of his influences that remain in current education.
Keywords: Rousseau, naturalism in education, myths, modern philosophy, Cartesian epistemology
