The correspondence between José Ortega y Gasset and Lorenzo Luzuriaga constitutes an exemplary case study for understanding the impact of exile on an entire generation of Spanish intellectuals who played a prominent role during the Second Republic. After tracing their relationship during the first third of the twentieth century, this article analyses twenty-eight letters that the pair exchanged during the first years of exile. The textual analysis merges historical-political contextualisation with the study of the development of theoretical positions, taking into account three main axes: the intellectual, the political and the personal. According-ly, it demonstrates the relevance of this correspondence beyond the anecdotal, and constitutes a revealing tool for understanding how personal, historical and social changes framed their theories and lives.
