MONOGRAFIA: Pedagogia per a una memòria democràtica
Ana Luísa Paz
Abstract
This article discusses the way in which the Estado Novo (1933-1974) regime created its own historical memory in Portugal through the Secretariat for National Propaganda (1933-1944) and the National Secre-tariat for Information (1944-1968), government bodies directed by António Ferro until 1949. Given that through the news reals, propaganda gained a particularly educational dimension, the first part is dedicat-ed to an exploration of its production context. I also argue that the pedagogical dimension of the cinema was consciously defended by António Ferro and led by the director António Lopes Ribeiro. In the second part, based on a thematic analysis of Jornal Português (1938-1951), I present it as an apparatus for the construction of a memory of the Estado Novo in different narrative dimensions of the use of time. As a hypothesis, I suggest that current cinematographic events also have a dimension of artistic memory, here called the interval time. The meta-narrative of cinema interrupts the propaganda about the Estado Novo, creating another historical memory for the Seventh Art in a counter-narrative of aesthetic resistance and art’s refusal to submit to politics.
