The aim of this article is to introduce a text, La femme pauvre (1866), by J.-V. Daubié, a French feminist from the 19th century. It is an extensive work of research in which the author analyses the livelihoods of women in an industrial society and the circumstances that take place when they face destitution. The problem is that they didn’t care about their general and professional instruction, which would allow them to achieve specialized and better paid tasks. But the de-generation of women of lowly condition, the so-called «daughters of the people», is caused mainly by the immorality and sexual licence (la débauche) of men of any social condition, and by the law of the Napoleonic Code (article 340) which forbids the investigation of paternity, leav-ing mothers who have children out of wedlock unprotected.
