Abstract
Domingo Polo Zapater (Cuarte, 1757-Pastriz, 1819) was an elementary education teacher, an organist in the parish church of Pastriz (Zaragoza) and a notable calligrapher. He taught in Pastriz from 1781 to 1819, for 38 years. He is the author of the Book of Song of the Divine Office of Pastriz, completed in 1813. This work was written in Latin and Spanish, with scores and songs for the entire liturgical year. Handwritten with beautiful illustrations and calligraphy, it has been catalogued as a cultural asset of the province of Zaragoza. Domingo Polo lived in Pastriz, whose proximity to Zaragoza meant that he was greatly influenced by the events that occurred there. Zaragoza’s sacred and
organ music enjoyed great prestige due to the rise of the two cathedrals. The enlightened upheld the importance of primary education, which should reach everyone, to eradicate the ignorance of a large part of the population. Two enlightened Aragonese women and pioneers of feminism stood
out: María Andresa Casamayor and Josefa Amar Borbón.
