Abstract
The peculiar German concept of Bildung, whose broad semantic spectrum makes it difficult to translate in single words in other languages, plays a determining role in the German idealist tradition and particularly in the thinking of Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel. The German philosopher did not publish a pedagogical treaty explaining his educational theory during his lifetime (beyond the occasional observation in his Nuremberg speeches). However, many scholars consider that the Hegelian system implicitly contains a complete theory of training, particularly in his Phenomenology of the Spirit. This article aims to determine the role of Bildung in Hegel, in its educational and cultural dimensions, and focuses particularly on universal training as an experiential process that enables access to absolute knowledge.
