REFLEXIONS I ASSAIGS

Abstract
Today, modifying the rules of play has become almost the only way that educators attempt to remedy the flaws perceived in the sporting system for children and youths. Of the specific approaches that have been tried, we analyse one: the Juga Verd Play programme. The purpose of the programme is to promote a set of values among the various groups of participants, with the foundation of the system being a voting process in which the votes of the different actors can determine the winner. Votes are cast by trainers, referees, parents and a new figure called the tutor de grada (“monitor of the stands”), who monitors fan behaviour. The paper argues that this approach is not beneficial for the mental development of children. For this reason, our view is that the issue warrants a proper ethical debate.
