DOSSIER: EL CREUER TRANSATLÀNTIC UNIVERSITARI DE 1934

Abstract
In 1934, under the Second Republic, the Universitat de Barcelona organized a cruise to visit a number of Spanish-speaking countries on the other side of the Atlantic and to build relational bridges. What defined the group of cruise passengers, students and faculty alike, was its transdisciplinarity, that is, a desire to bring together different disciplines for mutual enrichment. This paper delves into the historical moment in question by looking at the journey and at an autobiographical account of its leading figures, captured in the personal correspondence kept in the Fondo Guillermo Díaz-Plaja. The journey is experienced with an increased openness toward the new, a deeply observant eye and, in most cases, great enthusiasm. The journey and the perspectives of some of its leading figures reveal a modern, advanced viewpoint on what academic education should be.
