Abstract
This paper sets out the main strands of a pedagogy of difference founded on the notion of the monstrous as it appears in the phenomenology of Maurice Merleau-Ponty and Jean-Luc Marion, in dialogue with the same notion inherited from the Foucauldian post-structuralist tradition. Before monstrosity was constructed through language, understood by post-structuralism as a technology serving political power, we find an earlier, original monstrosity –a «fracturing» [«effraction»] of the iconicity of the body– which is the cornerstone of the knowledge, expression and acceptance of diversity. Without it, monstrosity and its condemnation would be incomprehensible.
