Abstract
The abandoned child posed a threat to the ideas and principles of positivism that underlay medical knowledge and legal discourse. The presence of abandoned children was the materialization of the unpredictability of social disorder, and a threat to progress and the modernization of
society. It also threatened a concept of education based on optimism and the introduction and
maintenance of European standards of civilization in Latin America as an automatic inheritance
from the colonization period and a reflection of the continent’s cultural dependence
