Abstract
During the first two years of life human beings undergo important physical and morphological changes. Diet is essential in this process, not only because it has to fulfill the high nutritional and energy needs of this period, but also because it can influence decisively in the development and health of the individual both in the short and long term. It is a time of great nutritional vulnerability because of the characteristics of rapid growth, intense metabolism, tissue differentiation and immaturity of the mechanisms involved in the homeostasis of the organism. This means diet requires special nutritional requirements. Thanks to breastfeeding and/or bottle-feeding, with complementary dietary requirements, the needs of babies should be fulfilled. Breast milk is to be considered the ideal food for babies because it provides the nutrients needed for healthy growth and development. It has protective cardiovascular effects and is associated with a lower risk of obesity, diabetes and blood pressure.
The aim of this project has been to determine the influence of nutrition in the first stage of life (0-2 years) on three diseases in adulthood. The diseases that were studied are dyslipidemia, hypertension and obesity. To evaluate this influence, an in depth knowledge of the diet of babies has been necessary, more specifically, breastfeeding, bottle-feeding and the introduction of complementary foods.
