Abstract
The article presents three episodes in which the problematic relationship of the Eastern Roman Empire with Papacy in Italy is thoroughly studied. These controversial episodes were not only rooted in religious confrontation, but also in political issues. In the seventh century, which was a time of transformation in the Mediterranean world, new powers appeared. The Popes wanted to play a new role according to their power. But the old Roman senatorial aristocracy fought to maintain its prominent traditional position. In some cases, an armed revolt exploded with disastrous results. In other cases, the revolt turned out to be merely a propaganda instrument to both parties.
